Easy Chilli Lemon Tofu

Serves 1 to 2

Tofu, although a very healthy protein, can be so plain and boring some times. Short of deep frying it, there are only so many ways you can make sure it is flavourful. My favourite methods to prepare tofu are to grill it on the barbecue on a skewer with other vegetables or to drizzle lightly pan fried tofu with some sauce. This recipe uses the latter method and has a very simple, yet pungent sauce which the tofu doesn’t need to be slathered in. Spicy, tangy and amazing! Yum! ...And really, really fast to prepare. You can serve as is or over a bed of other vegetables. I had it with spiralized carrot… so good! Plus- isn't it gorgeous?

What you need:

1 clove garlic minced
½ cup chopped green onion
1 tsp chilli pepper flakes (more for a real kick!)
2 tbsp soya sauce
1 tsp sesame oil
1 tsp rice vinegar
Freshly ground black pepper
Lemon juice from a super juicy ½ lemon or 1 whole lemon (mmmm!)
1 tbsp freshly chopped cilantro
Oil for shallow pan frying
1 packet firm/extra firm tofu
Salt

How to:

  1. Squeeze out extra water from the tofu and slice into equal pieces (8 to 10)
  2. Sprinkle some salt on each side of the tofu slices
  3. Heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the tofu slices until they are browned on each side (watch out for splashes!)
  4. Meanwhile prepare the sauce by mixing all the other ingredients
  5. Drizzle over the hot tofu slices and serve immediately

ENJOY!
